PARENT/CHEERLEADER MEETING

Several cheerleaders and their parents attended our varsity and junior varsity meetings last Saturday, May 31st. However, several of you were missing, due to other commitments, so I would like to take this opportunity to review the essential information from the meetings.

UNIFORM FITTINGS

As a reminder, uniform fittings will be held this Saturday, June 7th, at 11:00 A.M. at the Analy High School Dance Room (the room where cheer tryouts were held). Deanne Cromwell, our Varsity sales representative, will be present to conduct cheer uniform fittings, and to initiate each squad member’s uniform order. If you are unable to attend the fitting on June 7th, please contact me as soon as possible to arrange a private fitting. As discussed at the parent meeting, the uniform order for each squad member will include the following items: skirt (A-line), shell (full-length), unifit (long-sleeved turtleneck for football season), warm-ups (pants and jacket), cheer shoes, cheer gear bag, spankys (briefs), socks, hair bows, and camp/practice clothes. A deposit of $300.00 is required at the time of uniform fitting (check or credit card). The total amount of the uniform package is expected to be approximately $550.00, with the balance due in July when the uniforms arrive. Although this sounds like a lot of money (and with two girls, myself, on the Analy cheer team, I know how you feel), other area high schools require $1200.00 up front for cheer. As I have discussed with many of you, my goal is to keep the costs as affordable as possible, so that finances are not a barrier for those who wish to join our team. Several parents have offered to help with fundraising, and I will be contacting you shortly to organize our activities. It is my hope to earn enough money through fundraising activities to help offset the uniform and camp costs for each cheerleader. And, having said that, on to …

CHEER CAMP

Due to the fact that we do not (yet - just wait!) have a cheer budget reserve, and that parents will have to bear the cost of cheer camp this year, I have decided NOT to have the squad attend a residential cheer camp this year (which would cost $300.00 to $350.00 per cheerleader). We are, instead, planning on having the same nationally-recognized, professional cheer organization (e.g. UCA, USA, NCA) hold a cheer camp here for our squads. The cost is approximately half of a residential camp, and, since this is a building year for our squads, it is the most reasonable course of action. The cheer camp time frame I am looking at is early July. And, again, as I stressed at the parent meeting, I am in favor of fundraising to minimize the cheerleaders’ camp and uniform costs, and if we raise funds after we have all paid out-of-pocket for these expenses, I would definitely issue rebates.

And, in order to attend cheer camp and to BE an Analy Cheerleader, you must complete an …

ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION PACKET

As I have been a registered nurse for more than twenty-five years, I do not like surprises, especially the medical variety. My first priority is the health and safety of our cheerleaders. In order to be an Analy cheerleader, you must complete the 2008-2009 Athletic Participation Packet ( I have copies, or you can download it fron the Analy web site). Each cheerleader must be medically cleared by a physician or nurse practitioner before they will be allowed to participate in cheer camp or practice. Since the current plan is to hold cheer camp in July, I urge you to complete this requirement as soon as possible. If obtaining a sports physical is problematic for you (financial or otherwise), please let me know right away. I am in the process of investigating free, or reduced-cost, sports physicals, if there is a need.

PRACTICE SCHEDULES

I discussed summer practice schedules with the parents who attended the meetings. Those present indicated that late afternoon/evening practice times would work best during the summer, as many parents are at work, and cheerleaders are not already in school. Therefore, I have tentatively scheduled summer practices on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 for the J-V squad, and 6:30-8:30 for the Varsity squad (pending confirmation of Dance Room availability for those days/times). As I also discussed, practice times (and, possibly, days) will change in the fall as the cheerleaders are back in school, and the Dance Room facility is used by organizations other than AHS Cheer.

We discussed LOTS of other topics at the meetings, but, not to worry … you will receive a binder with all this great information at the first practice - which will, most likely, be held in mid to late June - I will keep you posted.

TRIBUTE TO OUR 2007-2008 CHEERLEADERS

And last, but not least, I have said this before, but I will say it again … I give total credit to the nine young women who were our Analy High School Cheerleaders for the 2007-2008 season - you are awesome (just look at all the great photos of the squad in the yearbook!), and the reason we had 26 prospective cheerleaders at tryouts this year is because your effort and energy, skill and professionalism have demonstrated what it means to be a cheerleader at Analy High School - in short, what a former cheerleader and graduate of Analy said, “You represent!”, and you surely do! I am so proud of you, and you made my first year as AHS Cheer coach so memorable! Thank you for all of the wonderful memories we created this past year!

UNIFORM FITTING UPDATE

There were 17 team members who attended the uniform fittings on June 7th. If you were not present, I have contacted you by telephone to arrange a private uniform fitting. Please be sure to complete this within the next few days, as we will need to place our uniform order shortly.

CHEER CAMP UPDATE

We have been in contact with USA regarding the scheduling of an on-site cheer camp. Our first requested dates are July 11th and 12th, with an alternate weekend of August 2nd and 3rd. The cost of the camp will be $127.00 for the two days. Also, I am in the process of reviewing cheer camp clothing options. It is my intent for the cheerleaders to use the two sets (tops and shorts) of camp clothes for practice clothes throughout the year. As soon as our dates are confirmed, I will let you know. As stated before, it is my intent to reimburse parents as much as possible for cheer expenses, so fundraising is the next priority.

FUNDRAISING

This week, I will be contacting the parents who indicated an interest in helping with fundraising. At present, we have a commitment to selling raffle tickets at the July 3rd fireworks celebration (6 cheerleaders), with a resulting donation of $250.00 to the cheer program. Many of you have expressed GREAT ideas for fundraising, so we will organize a strategy meeting in the near future. Also, I have been in contact with the president of the AHS Boosters, and have acquired information regarding the grant submission process and funding cycle for next year.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE UPDATE

Our initial cheer pracice is scheduled for Monday, June 30th (J-V practice 4:30-6:30; Varsity practice 6:30-8:30) at the AHS Dance Room (where you tried out, inside the AHS Gym). We will be learning the Analy cheers and getting prepared for the upcoming season. I realize that all of you have other time commitments ( family vacations, etc.), so it would be helpful if you would call me, or let me know at the first practice on June 30th what your summer plans are, so we can make summer Analy Cheer plans!

PRACTICE UPDATE

We had a GREAT J-V and Varsity squad practice on Monday - oh, my goodness - you guys rock!!! All of you are picking up the cheers so quickly, and the stunt sessions were unbelievable! Those of you who are new to cheer just AMAZED me with how fast you picked up the concepts, and came up to speed with new skills. And our experienced cheer team members really demonstrated great attitude, and helped to bring everyone along towards a cohesive team. WOW! I thought I was excited, before, about our upcoming season, but, after Monday’s practice … you make me proud, and you will certainly make Analy proud!

CHEER CAMP UPDATE

We have confirmed with USA (as of today), that cheer camp will be July 11th and 12th (YEAH!) - soooo, that will enable us to have several weeks, following cheer camp, to practice, and perfect, our cheers and choreography, prior to the first football game on September 5th. I will review the camp details at practice tomorrow (Wednesday).

CHEER CAMP DETAILS

As stated above, cheer camp will be held at Analy High School on Friday and Saturday, July 11th and 12th from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The cost for both days will be $127.00. Since we are on a short time frame, please send a check with your cheerleader to Monday’s (July 7th) practice. It is imperative that cheerleaders attend camp, as we will be learning choreography, stunts, and cheers that we will use throughout the 2008-2009 season. I will be contacting each cheerleader by phone this weekend to confirm your attendance.

PRACTICE UPDATE

Since the varsity and J-V cheer squads are learning some of the same material (cheers, stunts, etc.) it has become apparent that it would be more time efficient to schedule varsity and J-V practices simultaneously. Therefore, varsity and J-V squad practice times will BOTH be held from 6:30-8:30 PM, beginning Monday, July 7th. This is consistent with the school-year pracice schedule, in which both squads will be practicing during the same time frame.

FUNDRAISING UPDATE

There were seven cheerleaders who sold raffle tickets at the July 3rd Sebastopol Fireworks celebration, and raised $250.00 for the Analy cheer program. Those cheerleaders were: Shawna Brumley, Alysia Pinon, Krista Shatto, Keziah Watt, Bianca Watt, Jordanne Nagle, and Megan Hobbs. In addition, they also raised $90.00 by selling pom-poms. A big Tiger thank-you to these ladies for their four hours of hard work!

If it seems like there is a lot going on with Analy High School Cheer, that’s because there is!
